Wanderkäse is also known as hiking cheese in the Bregenzerwald. This village cheese is aged a minimum of 7 months. With more age comes a more sturdy body, so the cheese does not melt in your backpack on warm days and hence is able to withstand the task at hand. At 5 months the 6kg wheels start to develop a sweetness on the finish to accompany the more traditional Alpine savory wallop of flavors.
For over 100 years the Langenegg village dairy in the Bregenzerweld has been producing award-winning Langenegger cheese and butter from the local hay milk.
